Default 460 (7.5l) same bolt pattern as 7.3l diesel?

Hey again, I've got another question with this 460 project I'm working on... I was just wondering if the 7.3l diesel uses the same bolt pattern. I think i was told that a ZF 5speed from a newer truck would bolt to a 460, that is the same 5speed on a 7.3, so I figured the bolt patterns were the same. so far ive found that that appears to be true. I just wanted to check because instead of the 5 i would like to try and find a 6 speed. That will probably increase cost of the project considerable because that tranny is more rare, but I was hoping a six speed would help with mileage and speed on the highway. Plus, who doesn't want a truck that can hit 120 on the highway? Oh, I'm also wondering what would be the best sort of pistons to use in a 460, assuming im aiming at a 10.1 to 10.6 compression ratio and hope for about 480hp/550-650tq with decent engine longevity? thanks for the help in advance. ps, sorry I'm not around much, i still haven't gotten my own cpu.

The 460 and 7.3L share the same bolt pattern between the bellhousing and the block.

I would have sworn they were, but I just called a buddy of mine and he says they're different.

More research...

He says the bolt pattern is the same between the 460/429/400/351M/351C (7 3/4" between the top two holes).

Ok, shit... that sucks. I wanted a 6spd on a 460. Oh, so the 351C shares the same bolt pattern as the 351M (clevlend modified) and the 400(351m stroker)? I thought the C and M were different bolt patterns. that could be good news.

The 351C, M, and 400 are the "335" family of engines. And FYI, the 351M is not a Cleveland modified as much as it is a destroked 400. The M does stand for Modified, but it never had anything to do with the 351C. The 400 is a 351C with an inch taller deck height. The 351M is a 400 block with a 351W crank (in other words, it's a destroked 400).

Doesn't the 6-speed you want bolt to a bellhousing? Why can't you mate it to a 460 bellhousing?

More info... The Zf 6spd goes to a 5.4l 8, 6.8l 10, and the 6.0l diesel. I have been in (i think 99) a 250 with the 7.3 and a 6 speed though... which makes me wonder. Also, http://www.rodshop.com.au/gearboxes.htm these guys say they have done a ZF to 460 converison before... and it appears the ZF 5 and 6 speeds have the same bolt pattern because some of them share the same engines... but thats all I've got for now. I really want to find a way to make it work..

I don't really know, I guess it ought to have a bell housing, so then a 460 bell housing could be made to fit the tranny then, couldn't it? I'll have to keep digging. But I really wish I could get my hands on the parts to see the results. And sorry for the slip, I guess, its just the book I've got says the 351m means its a modified cleveland since it came after the 351c and that they share bore, stroke, and "little else" but... you can't trust everything you read now, can you :-) well... I'll keep looking. If nothing else a toploader would be just fine, and easier.

Nope. No such luck, even though i got it backwards. Integrated bellhousing design, so one piece. those bitches.

The 6 bolt Windsors, you're right (Actually, dammit, the 351W was the only one in the bunch that was a "Windsor", but I know what you mean). The 351C uses the small block pattern, the 351M and 400 use the 429/460 big block pattern. I knew that, dammit. lol

I'm getting a headache.
