Default C; Unformatted or Damaged

I got my new drive, and I'm having problems installing 2000 on it.

On the Windows 2000 Professional Setup it says
Please wait while Setup formats the partition
C; Unformatted or Damaged 305243 MB
on 131070 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on ATAPI.

Then it has the formatting bar at the bottom. I tried formatting it twice this way (which takes forever).

The first thing I did was use G-Parted to create 4 partitions. A 10 GB for windows then I split the rest into 3 partitions for Linux. It didn't like this either. Still made me go through the MS formatting procedure.

Are all my problems because it can't use anything past the 131070 MB on the disk? The install disk and hard disk works too BTW.

At the top it's supposed to be a colon. Can't see, don't have my glasses.

Disk media is damaged. See if you can find a Win9x DOS boot disk. Boot to that, create one large partition in FAT32 (assuming the drive is 127GB or less), and format it with the following command:

A:> FORMAT C: /U /C /S

/U forces an unconditional format,
/C clears the bad sector list,
/S transfers system files to make the drive bootable.

If it passes this, you're good. If not, drive's toast, and your only next recourse is some sort of manufacturer diagnostics utility. (WD Data LifeGuard Tools if its Western Digital, that sort of thing.)

If you got the drive from eBay, shame on you. I never buy hard drives from eBay. Always get them new, or at least from a working system that you got for parts.

Now, if the drive is more than 127GB, you'd have to use 3rd-party tools, like Partition Magic, then do a scandisk/chkdsk on it. Or perhaps use the mfgr tools.

Don't use an OS installer to try to format anything at this point. Do some diagnostics on it first.

It's not in the cards.

It's 320 GB. I tried Fat 32 and NTFS.

I used GParted to make one 10 GB partition for Windows, and three others a little smaller than 100 GB. The drive works fine in Linux, and I tested it with TestDisk.

PM me your private email. I'll send you a couple floppy .IMG files you can make disks from. There will be 2 floppies. One is a boot disk I made myself, and the other is a DOS-based Partition Magic Pro. And in that email I'll give you (MY version of) detailed instructions and steps to take. At this point, My goal is to make sure that it's not media damage. If it is, yer screwed, but if it's not, there may yet be hope.

I found this on accident while I was writing the tutorial. I think this is my problem.

Yea, i was going to say, W2000 won't recognize a HD that large. You must run XP pro or newer system.

Why do you have to install 2000 first? Do you only have the upgrade?

Nevermind I found a copy of the stand alone. Now I need to reformat the entire freaking drive. Hopefully this will work. I guess I'll have to pop in my copy of XP upgrade if it gives me any beef with putting in a key. If not I just might say fuck it or put it on a separate drive for the one time every six months that I use it...

I covered it a couple times in other posts. Doesn't make any difference because if I didn't find another copy of XP, I would have had to somehow found a way to install 2000.

Must not had been in this thread, because you say nothing about XP until u told me you did-lol

Anyhow, you could find an older drive, install 2000, then plug in the new drive, install XP on it maybe?

Honestly not sure how to get past the drive too big problem. I always used WD hds, and they come with a nice formatting software.

Can you tell W2000 to partition the drive it'self?

No it was in a couple other other threads. The way that MS is setup is that it has to detect an older version of Windows before it will install the upgrade, so I don't think that will work. I tried formatting and partitioning the drive with both the standard Ubuntu partitioner, and G-Parted, which is probably the best partitioning tool.

Tried that two or three times. Still wouldn't work. Windows still wouldn't even recognize it's own shitty filesystem (both NTFS and Fat 32). I don't know what the point of putting a partitioner on an install program if it doesn't work.
